Every century has its storytellers — and every story needs its keepers. The Torchbearers are those entrusted to ensure that The Torchbearer Project endures across generations. They are the bridge between past and future, preserving the voices of today so they may be heard a hundred years from now.
What is a Torchbearer?
A Torchbearer is both a guardian of memory and a steward of legacy. Every generation (about every twenty years) will be represented by three torchbearers. Chosen from within the family, each Torchbearer holds the responsibility of keeping the project alive and ensuring it fulfills its century-long mission — to reach Time Capsule Opening Day on December 2, 2125, when the family’s letters will be open and read.
This role is more than ceremonial; it is a commitment to continuity, trust, and the protection of a shared heritage.

Their Purpose
The Torchbearers ensure that The Torchbearer Project remains an unbroken chain of remembrance. Their purpose is simple yet profound:
- To preserve the story of who we were.
- To appoint the next generation to continue the work.
- To protect the time capsule and its legacy until it is opened a century after its creation.
Each Torchbearer serves as a living link between generations — a reminder that memory, when protected, becomes immortality.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Appoint Successors
Every twenty years, each Torchbearer selects a new family member to carry the torch forward. These individuals are chosen for their integrity, reliability, and love of family history.
With each appointment, a copy of the updated Torchbearer list is sent to the Ridge Haven Heritage Site, the official guardian of the project archives.
2. Pass the Flame
The transition between generations is marked by a symbolic Passing of the Torch ceremony. Whether shared over dinner or during a family reunion, this moment honors the continuation of stewardship and reminds each successor of the sacred duty they inherit.
3. Preserve the Timeline
The project follows a thoughtfully designed schedule, ensuring that the letters are opened exactly one hundred years after their inception. Torchbearers monitor this timeline and, if delays arise, coordinate with Ridge Haven Heritage Site to realign the plan.
4. Communicate and Coordinate
Torchbearers stay connected — introducing new members, exchanging information, and meeting periodically (in person or virtually) to confirm that progress remains steady. Their communication ensures unity across branches of the family.
5. Document and Archive
All activities — from appointments to ceremonies — are recorded and shared with Ridge Haven Heritage Site. These records form part of the official archive, preserving not only the letters but also the living story of how the project endured.
6. Safeguard the Capsule
The Ridge Haven Heritage Site houses the time capsule permanently under the protection of the Ridge Haven Family Trust—the legacy trust that is set in place for the next 365 years. Torchbearers confirm its preservation at least every decade, maintaining an unbroken connection between the family and the heritage site.
Opening Day: December 2, 2125
On that date — one hundred years from the project’s beginning — the appointed Torchbearers for that era will open the capsule and share the letters with the family. That generation will decide how best to celebrate and preserve the century of voices—perhaps through a book, a documentary, or gathering a new set of letters and encapsulating them for another century—ensuring the tradition continues.
A Legacy of Light
The Torchbearers’ promise is simple: to keep the flame burning.
Their faithfulness guarantees that the love, courage, and stories of this generation will shine through time — reaching the hearts of those who will one day read these letters and remember where they came from.
In carrying the torch, they protect not only the project but the very spirit of family — so that, when the time capsule opens, our descendants will not just read our words; they will feel our presence.
