Jacob Dragoo, son of the legendary William “Indian Billy” Dragoo and Rebecca Matheny, was born in 1815 in his grandfather John Dragoo’s cabin near Barrackville, Monongalia County, Virginia. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Licking County, Ohio, and later, as a young husband and father, became a pioneer in Livingston County, Illinois. In his final years, Jacob moved his family to Montgomery County, Iowa, drawn by the promise of the expanding railroad and the opportunities of the western frontier.
This volume offers a rich glimpse into Jacob’s lineage, tracing his ancestors from France and their exodus with the Huguenots to England, followed by their hopeful arrival on Staten Island in the new land called America. Journey alongside Jacob and Susanna Dragoo, their children, and more than a century of their descendants through a tapestry of facts, photographs, documents, and personal stories.
